Dinosaurs of the past and future

VIOLA - There's a dinosaur in my house. Day and night, it sits on a tall, narrow table near my front door. When I'm engrossed in a book or taking a nap, it can shriek and scare the daylights out of me. Soon it will be extinct.

Kickapoo Chautauqua

GAYS MILLS - Here's an idea I've had kicking around my brain pan for quite a while, something I call, for lack of a better term, the Kickapoo Chautauqua. Are you familiar with that word, Chautauqua? It refers to a movement popular in America in the late 19th Century and early 20th Century. It was a public gathering for education, entertainment, speakers, and discussion on the topics of the day. The first Chautauqua was held in 1874 on the shores of Chautauqua Lake in New York State. In the days before the excess access we "enjoy" today via television ...

Gays Mills Village Board regroups after flooding

GAYS MILLS - The floods had come and gone (at least for now). Apple Fest had happened without a major problem, other than the cool, cloudy weather. So, the Gays Mills Village Board meeting on Monday night seemed to be a short and matter-of-fact meeting of some people who just wanted to get home.

Will sand dams help the Muellers fight flooding?

LIBERTY - Town of Liberty landowners Mike and Susan Mueller are no strangers to the impacts of flash flooding. On their rural property where the two operate a pastured pork farm, their steeply hilled land and driveway are regularly scoured and gouged from water rampaging down Old Highway 56. The situation causes ongoing road repair issues for township road crews, access problems for the Muellers and neighbors uphill, and the expense of repairs for all.

North Crawford Foodservice is innovating

NORTH CRAWFORD - The North Crawford foodservice program is making lots of innovative changes. The program has gained steadily in popularity in recent years with both students and staff. Fearing the lack of flying insects

GAYS MILLS - This recent headline in the Wisconsin State Journal caught my good eye: 'Scientists fear lack of flying insects.' I doubt that this is a named phobia (yet) but several scientists have simply noticed, casually, that flying insects are not as plentiful as they once were, and they are worried about it.

Gays Mills orchards are ready for Apple Festival

GAYS MILLS - If there ever was a good day for a tour of the Gays Mills apple orchards, last Sunday would surely be it-a sunny day with temperatures in the upper 60s had the customers, the workers and yes even the owners smiling. It was going to be good year for apples–you could feel it.
