Baby, it’s really cold outside

VERNON COUNTY - Little Bitty is swimming in the creek, squawking for the rest of the flock to join her, but they are hunkered down in a sunny spot near the duck hall. The sun is shining like gold on this brittle, narrow valley but it's still cold. Damn cold. And, it's afternoon.

My twilight zone

GAYS MILLS - Twilight Zone was a great TV series that ran from 1959-1964. Rod Serling was the creative genius and host behind this innovative show. The show had a new cast of characters every week that introduced a lot of young actors and future stars to us on the small screen. The stories dealt with science fiction, paranormal, or futuristic themes and stood out from the herd of westerns and sitcoms otherwise available in those days. There was usually a surprising twist and often a moral at the end of each half hour Twilight Zone episode. Anyone familiar with the ...

Pursuing the perfect New Years Eve

VERNON COUNTY - New Year's Eve is a thorn in my side. I'm a fan of New Year's resolutions (not that I always abide by them), and I love having New Year's Day off of work. It's the crazy hype of hat-wearing, horn-blowing, and dressing-up that tires me out just thinking about the eve of a new year.

Happy New Year

GAYS MILLS - I'm usually a fairly happy-go-lucky kind of guy. But lately I'm starting to wonder if I might have a touch of S.A.D. Seasonal Affective Disorder, it's a real thing and this is the season when it shows up. It's a form of depression brought on by short days and long nights and is more common the further north you go.

Lil’ Ole Lady’s New Years Eve celebration

GAYS MILLS - I was listening to a comedian on NPR, complain about New Year's Eve-she didn't understand why everyone gets all gussied up and glittery to go out and about on the town. As she put it, nothing really changes after midnight except you have to remember to change the number of the year when you're writing checks.
