A weekly attempt at a one-person home run

VERNON COUNTY - This week marks the beginning of my sixth year of sitting at my desk with my two index fingers flying across the computer keyboard to type a story. Often, when asked about being a columnist, I remark, "You can't hit a home run every week." I doubt there are any professional ball players, who hit the ball out of the park every time they bat. But when they do, I bet it makes them more motivated to keep playing!

Zoooom…and I’m green with envy

VERNON COUNTY - The whole wide world, as far as I can see from my wraparound deck, is green! I'm surrounded by trees of all kinds in my valley and I am loving the greenness of summertime. Green seems to bring out the best in me-unless it's the green of envy.

Turtle tutorial

GAYS MILLS - Turtles are one of my favorite critters. I think of them now because they show themselves at this time of year. These ancient animals put themselves at considerable risk getting out into our modern world. Turtles are one of the oldest reptiles and have been around for 220 million of years according to fossil records. Their hard shells, armor against predators who might attack them, doesn't protect them very well crossing highways which is where they often show up.

Going from the zoo to the moon in a day

GAYS MILLS - We embarked this weekend on yet another summer time family ritual. The Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison. My aunt and young cousin Romeo joined us for the adventure, which started with a quick pit stop at Peck's Market. For Thatcher, the thrill of baby goats sucking on his finger and throwing corn at a mountain of bunny rabbits may have been enough, but we continued onward to the big zoo!

With a new librarian, Gays Mills library is evolving with the changing times
